Solar and wind are growing in the energy mix but are variable, intermittent, and produce excess energy that is wasted. To move to a net-zero future while preserving a stable power grid, it is critical to store this excess energy so that renewable power and decarbonized heating and cooling are available on-demand at any time, on any day, even on a seasonal basis. Current energy storage is high-cost, requires emission-intense mining, and can only supply power for a few hours.
